Recreation Advisory Committee

Minutes

 

1.       Call to Order at 7:02 PM

Present: Gail, Fred, Steve, Rick, Gary (Chair), Mike, Brett (Director)

Not Present: Neil, Mitch

2.       Approval of Minutes from December 2011 Meeting

Motion made to accept minutes with corrections by Steve, 2nd by Fred. Motion passed 5-0.

3.       Director’s Report

Questions arose by usage of school gymnasiums for Rec Basketball. Working with SHS Athletic Director for usage with Middle School Gym not totally on-line yet.

Gary asked for copies of the Assistant Director’s Job Description for the committee.

4.       Sharon Dog Park Update

Rob Maidman came in to represent the Sharon Dog Park. He updated the Committee on the financial status of the Dog Park. They pay for waste disposal and maintenance of the park. They have a fundraiser coming in May. Rick asked what is a sample usage. Rob to look into that. No incidents in past six months at the park. Gary asked for a list of their Board.

5.       Lake Management Update

Cliff Towner came in to represent the Lake Management Committee. He spoke about Lake Massapoag and the concerns about weed control. He stated that about one million gallons of water flow out of the Lake each day via the flume house. He asked about the snow fencing that was requested to be put up to keep the geese off of Memorial Beach during the winter. He also spoke about the Town Warrant article for May 12 Town Meeting about the ban of dogs from Memorial Beach.

6.       Recreation Advisory Committee Description

The Committee had discussions about updating the 1968 Town Meeting regarding Article 22 relating to the Recreation Committee. Motion was made to update Article 22 to say, “ The Town of Sharon rename the Recreation

 

 

 

 

 

Committee, the Recreation Advisory Committee. The Recreation Advisory Committee is to recommend recreational policies, programs and to advise concerning public and private recreation activities throughout the Town and that such Committee be comprised of no more than eight at large members appointed by the Board of Selectmen for three year overlapping terms, one member appointed by the School Committee and the Executive Secretary of the Board of Selectmen, ex officio.” Motion made by Steve. 2nd by Mike. Motion passed 5-0.

7.       Community Center

Gary said that he has spoken to Ben about the concerns that were previously spoken about regarding the usage of rooms in the Community Center. Ben asked Gary to hold off speaking to Eric about it at this time. Gary asked Brett to invite Eric to the March meeting.

Brett was asked to come with a plan in regards to weekend usage.

8.       Basketball Update

Brett said that basketball is going strong despite the weekly changes at the gyms. All season ending awards have been ordered.

9.       Community Preservation Projects

Committee listed the following as possible projects: Landfill fields, Community Center playground, Sacred Heart field

10.   Old Business

Brett advised the Committee of the lack of a Town wide policy for CORI. There is not one in place at this time that states CORI must be done by any organization that uses Town fields. This policy is needed to protect the Town and it’s youth.

Gary asked that Brett ask other towns what there policy is.

11.   Adjourn

Motion to adjourn made by Steve. 2nd by Rick. Motion passed 5-0. Meeting adjourned at 9:53 PM.
